Inner Circle Seminars
Existential Apprenticeship
First Term: Autumn 2002 (Wednesday evenings)
Medard Boss: The Meaning and Content of Sexual Perversions (1947)
This is a unique venture in existential psychotherapy training. It may complement existing training, or help qualified psychotherapists to deepen their knowledge and improve their practice.
The heart of the training is the ethical, existential, phenomenological exploration of a ‘canon’ of more than one hundred case studies, some classic, some less well known. The spirit of the training is the existential principle that theory, in its original Greek meaning, is contemplation of practice. Existential training will, therefore, include as a central component, in addition to personal analysis and supervision, critical contemplation of the practice of leading practitioners, as recorded in their case studies, or in autobiographical accounts by clients.
The first term’s seminars, conducted by Anthony Stadlen, are devoted to a rigorous study of Medard Boss’s ‘daseinsanalytic’ case studies in his 1947 book on sexual ‘perversions’. (Boss’s book was written under the influence of his personal relationship with Binswanger and, especially from the second edition on, with Heidegger.)
