Liberation by Oppression:
A Comparative Study of Slavery and Psychiatry (2002)

Anthony Stadlen
conducts
Inner Circle Seminar No. 62
Sunday 27 October 2002
10 a.m. to 5 p.m.
Szasz’s first paper was published in 1947. Fifty-five years (more than seven hundred publications) later, his style is clearer and more incisive than ever. Today, we examine his latest book, published in 2002. It is sometimes claimed that Szasz repeats himself. In Kierkegaard’s sense, of repetition as ‘purity of heart’, an authentic commitment to ‘one thing’, this is true. As Heidegger says, each great thinker ‘thinks one thought’. Szasz’s ‘one thought’ is human freedom, responsibility, dignity and decency; with its corollary: the immorality of the compulsory compulsive repetition, the destructive ‘death instinct’, of clinical psychiatry. His thinking is always fresh, creative and new.

Boss: Sexual Perversions. Inner Circle Seminars Existential Apprenticeship (Autumn 2002)

Inner Circle Seminars
Existential Apprenticeship

First Term: Autumn 2002 (Wednesday evenings)
Medard Boss: The Meaning and Content of Sexual Perversions (1947)

This is a unique venture in existential psychotherapy training. It may complement existing training, or help qualified psychotherapists to deepen their knowledge and improve their practice.
The heart of the training is the ethical, existential, phenomenological exploration of a ‘canon’ of more than one hundred case studies, some classic, some less well known. The spirit of the training is the existential principle that theory, in its original Greek meaning, is contemplation of practice. Existential training will, therefore, include as a central component, in addition to personal analysis and supervision, critical contemplation of the practice of leading practitioners, as recorded in their case studies, or in autobiographical accounts by clients.
The first term’s seminars, conducted by Anthony Stadlen, are devoted to a rigorous study of Medard Boss’s ‘daseinsanalytic’ case studies in his 1947 book on sexual ‘perversions’. (Boss’s book was written under the influence of his personal relationship with Binswanger and, especially from the second edition on, with Heidegger.)

Peter Swales
conducts (12-hour)
Inner Circle Seminar No. 61
introduced by
Anthony Stadlen
Sunday 16 June 2002
10 a.m. to 10 p.m.

Peter Swales’s thesis is that Freud finds himself everywhere. Swales demonstrates this from his meticulously researched historical findings on Freud’s ‘Signorelli’ slip, ‘Screen Memories’, the two dream books, The Psychopathology of Everyday Life, and ‘The “Moses” of Michelangelo’. No-one concerned with Heidegger’s critique of ‘empathy’ can afford to miss this seminar.

Laing: ‘Series and Nexus in the Family’. Inner Circle Seminar 60 (26 May 2002)

R. D. Laing

‘Series and Nexus in the Family’

Anthony Stadlen
conducts

Inner Circle Seminar No. 60
Sunday 26 May 2002
10 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Forty years ago, the May–June 1962 issue of New Left Review contained a seminal paper by Laing, ‘Series and Nexus in the Family’. It set out the thinking, grounded in Sartre’s Critique of Dialectical Reason (1960), that underlies the great phenomenological descriptions of families of ‘schizophrenics’ in Laing and Esterson’s Sanity, Madness and the Family (1964) and Esterson’s The Leaves of Spring (1970). It also, through its incorporation into Laings The Politics of Experience (1967), influenced Szasz’s The Manufacture of Madness (1970). In this seminar, we examine the original paper in some detail. This will make it easier to read the descriptions of the families without false assumptions.

Dora’s Return. Inner Circle Seminar 59 (28 April 2002)

Ida (‘Dora’) and Otto Bauer

Dora’s Return

100 Years On

‘A disagreeable creature who preferred revenge to love’
(Ernest Jones on Dora)

‘One of the most repulsive hysterics he had ever met’
(Felix Deutsch on Dora)

Anthony Stadlen
conducts

(12-hour) Inner Circle Seminar No. 59
Sunday 28 April 2002
10 a.m. to 10 p.m.
Dora returned to Freud a hundred years ago this month. She told him she had elicited confessions from Herr and Frau K. that they had lied. Freud called this her ‘revenge’. Was he right? We draw on Anthony Stadlen’s original historical research—and Leviticus, Levinas, Derrida, Irigaray—to think this through.

Venue: Room A, Acland Building, Regent’s College, London NW1 4NS

Heidegger and Boss on Dreams. Inner Circle Seminar 58 (10 March 2002)

Martin Heidegger and Medard Boss

Heidegger and Boss on Dreams

Anthony Stadlen
conducts
Inner Circle Seminar No. 58
Sunday 10 March 2002
10 a.m. to 5 p.m.
Seventy-five years after the publication of Being and Time, we explore Heidegger’s thinking on dreams. This is in his lectures on Hölderlin’s hymn, Andenken; in other scattered remarks; and in Boss’s two books on dreams, the outcome of collaboration with Heidegger. Boss claimed Heidegger only ever dreamed one dream; it was of his school matriculation. But we present new evidence from Heidegger’s love-letters in his seventies to a young woman; these throw doubt on Boss’s claim. We try to show that, however limited Heidegger’s dream experience, his thinking on dreams is of fundamental importance for psychotherapy.

Heidegger: Being and Time 75 Years On. Inner Circle Seminar 57 (10 February 2002)

Martin Heidegger

Heidegger’s Being and Time

75 Years On

Anthony Stadlen
conducts
Inner Circle Seminar No. 57
Sunday 10 February 2002
10 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Heidegger’s Being and Time was published seventy-five years ago this month, in February 1927. Binswanger tried to apply it to descriptive psychiatry; but Heidegger said Binswanger had hopelessly misunderstood. In Zollikon Seminars, Heidegger shows Boss and his school how he would apply his thinking to psychotherapy. Is this the golden touch on psychotherapy of a master thinker? Or are there seductive dangers in ‘Heideggerian’ psychotherapy, similar to the seductions of what Heidegger once saw as another embodiment of his thinking, Nazism? This seminar will explore Heidegger’s work with careful attention to texts. It will also present original historical research findings on Boss’s case studies.

Venue: Room J, Acland Building, Regent’s College, London NW1 4NS

Cost: Students £59, others £76, by 7 February (some bursaries)
