Malcolm Macmillan conducts: Freud, Michelangelo, Moses. Inner Circle Seminar 69 (6 July 2003)

Freud, Michelangelo, Moses

The Limitations of ‘Empathy’

Malcolm Macmillan
conducts
Inner Circle Seminar No. 69
introduced by
Anthony Stadlen
at the Victoria and Albert Museum
Sunday 6 July 2003
10 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Malcolm Macmillan presents his and Peter Swales’s critique of Freud’s ‘The Moses of Michelangelo’, a paradigmatic text for psychoanalysts and art historians. Freud wrote of his ‘deep engrossment in the Bible story (almost as soon as I had learnt the art of reading)’. But Macmillan will argue, from the evidence both of the Biblical text and of the reconstruction of the statue at the Victoria and Albert Museum, that Freud’s interpretation is based on a bizarre misreading of the Bible.
