The Collapse of All Values and the Second Birth of Psychoanalysis. Inner Circle Seminars (Second series: 1997 – 1998)

THE COLLAPSE OF ALL VALUES

AND THE SECOND BIRTH OF PSYCHOANALYSIS

ANTHONY STADLEN

conducts
FREUD CENTENARY SEMINARS
(SECOND SERIES)

On 21 April 1896 Freud announced a new method: ‘psychoanalysis’. He claimed it confirmed his ‘seduction theory’. But on 21 September 1897 he secretly gave the theory up. He wrote to Fliess of ‘this collapse of all values’. But Ernest Jones called it the ‘acme of Freud’s life’. Was this a new birth of psychoanalysis? Or a betrayal?
In these seminars Anthony Stadlen presents more of his unpublished historical research findings. He invites participants to join him in studying further stages on Freud’s way: from October 1897 to July 1898.
He invites discussion of fundamental theory, including existential seduction theory: a renewal of Freud’s quest a hundred years on.
