The Secret of the Dream. Inner Circle Seminars (Fourth Series: October 1999 – July 2000)

THE SECRET OF THE DREAM

ANTHONY STADLEN
conducts
FREUD CENTENARY SEMINARS
(Fourth Series: October 1999 – July 2000)

These seminars retrace Freud’s path a hundred years later (to the day when possible). On 4 November 1899 The Interpretation of Dreams was published. Freud later wrote: ‘Insight such as this falls to one’s lot but once in a lifetime.’ He took the dream as a ‘paradigm’. He claimed (in the second edition of his book, published in 1909) that his way of interpreting dreams was ‘the royal road to the knowledge of the unconscious in the life of the soul’. We examine his claims. We approach fundamental theory through contemplation of our own practice. We explore how psychotherapy may be non-seductive and non-violent; existential, phenomenological, ethical. These seminars are for human beings: not for time-servers, technologists or mediocrities who aspire only to registration and respectability. They offer training and supervision in the authentic existential-phenomenological tradition. They renew Freud’s quest a hundred years on.

1. 10 October 1999

2. 7 November 1999

3. 5 December 1999
‘When does a person become hysterical instead of paranoid?

4. 9 January 2000
‘...it is silent in me. If the sexual theory comes, I shall listen to it.’

5. 6 February 2000
‘I am nothing but a conquistador-temperament, an adventurer...’

6. 5 March 2000
‘...I spend every second Tuesday evening among my Jewish brethren...’

7. 2 April 2000
‘I know what I am doing is offensive to the majority.’

8. 7 May 2000
‘...none of the undiscovered provinces in the soul-life, which I was the first of the mortals to enter, will ever bear my name...’

9. 4 June 2000
‘“...the secret of the dream revealed itself to Dr Sigm. Freud.”’

10. 2 July 2000
‘All is surging and gloaming, an intellectual hell, layer after layer; in the darkest core, glimpses of the contours of Lucifer-Amor.’
